Video Survey

The system uses high-definition digital video to capture the road surface condition. The video is both chainage-referenced and geo-referenced for ease of post-processing. This ensures maximum compatibility with the LGCSB MapRoad package (where underlying data storage is chainage based) as well as full compatibility with any GIS including MapInfo as the data is also geo-referenced using GPS technology.

Data Collection

A very accurate DMI (Distance Measuring Instrument) is attached to the vehicle and connected to the hardware interface. A high-specification GPS device is also attached to the vehicle and connected to the hardware interface. This video camera outputs a high-resolution digital video (DV) stream to the hardware interface. The video stream is compressed using state-of the-art compression algorithms to retain maximum definition at minimum storage space. All of the data capture is in real time. The video can be subsequently post-processed in the office to produce Video PCI (VPCI) data. In addition, the ride quality of each pavement section can be easily recorded during the video survey if required.

Applications of Video Survey

The video survey has a number of different applications:

A permanent record of the road condition for network management.

Before and After surveys on haul roads, consruction roads and roads with significant utility works.

Processing of road condition to produce a Pavement Condtion Index (PCI).

Identification of road marking types, deficiencies and lenghts for improvement.

Essential input for loacl authority Pavement Management System.

Road condition record for Quality Bus Network (QBN) sections and provision of cycle lanes.
